Reflections on the KTP Residential Training Experience at Ashorne Hill
As part of the KTP journey, every Associate takes part in residential training at Ashorne Hill. Hannah McIlroy, a KTP Associate with Cooneen Group, recently completed both residential modules and shared her reflections.

As a KTP Associate, stepping into a project that blends academic knowledge with business impact is both exciting and challenging. To support this journey, all Associates attend residential training at Ashorne Hill, a dedicated management training centre nestled in the Warwickshire countryside.
This is no ordinary training course. Ashorne Hill is a core part of the KTP experience, designed to help Associates like me build confidence, develop essential skills and connect with peers from across the UK. The programme blends online learning with in-person, residential sessions - providing time and space to reflect, learn, and grow beyond the day-to-day project work.
Module One: People, Projects and Teamwork
In January, I attended the first of two residential sessions at Ashorne Hill. It was an excellent opportunity to step away from my usual work environment and engage in a tailored blended learning programme focused on professional development and impact.
The topics we covered included project management, leadership skills, presentation strategies and team development. The activities were hands-on, practical, and – at times – fiercely competitive! We also completed the Belbin Team Personality Test, which gave me useful insights into my own strengths, working style, and how I contribute to team dynamics.
The highlight of this first session was meeting fellow Associates from across the UK who were at a similar stage in their KTP journey. It was fascinating to learn about their projects, motivations and career backgrounds. Everyone brought a unique perspective, and there was a shared enthusiasm for using our roles to make meaningful change – something that really underlines what KTP is all about.
Module Two: Strategy, Creativity and Commercial Awareness
Fast forward to April, and I was back at Ashorne Hill for the second residential — this time with a focus on commercial awareness. The module explored strategic thinking, creativity, innovation, and change management, all vital tools for delivering long-term impact within a business setting.
One concept that really stood out was the idea of “mental locks” – the barriers that can stop people embracing new ideas. We explored how to overcome resistance to change by better understanding different perspectives. Using frameworks like PESTLE and SWOT, we were able to relate these ideas back to our own projects, helping us take a more strategic view of the wider business environment.
We also covered practical business tools, including pricing, forecasting, marketing strategy, and key financial topics like breakeven analysis, depreciation, and cash flow. The training culminated in a simulation game – SimCo – where we worked in teams to run a company and apply our learning in real-time under pressure. It was intense but incredibly rewarding.
Again, reconnecting with the other Associates was a real highlight. These relationships have become a valuable support network – one that I know will last far beyond the KTP itself.
My Takeaway
My experience at Ashorne Hill gave me the space to build confidence, gain practical tools, and reflect on how to lead positive change in the workplace. I came away from both modules feeling energised, connected, and better equipped to deliver impact through my project.
If you're considering applying for a KTP, Ashorne Hill is just one part of a much broader development journey – one that equips you not just for your current role, but for the career that follows.
