Electric Vehicle Infrastructure at Queen's

As part of Strategy 2030 and our commitment to achieving net zero by 2040, we are on a journey to creating a more sustainable transport infrastructure across our campus.

As part of our electric vehicle infrastructure, Queen's provides double-headed EV chargers in key locations across campus, designed to improve accessibility and support our transition to a lower carbon campus.

Queen's also operates a fleet of fully electric vans servicing the University estate. These vehicles support day-to-day campus operations, offering a cleaner, quieter alternative to traditional diesel-powered transport.

Below is a list of FAQ's that provide further information to those wishing to use the electric vehicle chargers at the University.

  • How many electric vehicle charging points are there on campus and where are they located?

There are 10 double-headed electric vehicle charging points located in the following locations:

    • Two chargers are located on the Main site (behind the Administration Building)
    • One charger is located within the Fitzwilliam Street car park

  • How long can I charge my vehicle and is there a cost (tariff) for charging?

The electric vehicle chargers at the University are designed to offer staff the ability to 'top-up' their vehicle's charge to assist in future journeys.

It is important to note that they are not designed to be the primary source for charging your vehicle. To ensure that as many vehicles as possible get the opportunity to receive a charge, a time limit has been placed on each individual charging session.

    • The maximum period for charging a vehicle at Queen's is four hours. Power to the vehicle will stop after this time period.
    • Vehicles staying on charge points after four hours will be charged an overstay fee of £1 per minute.
    • The cost (tariff) for charging your vehicle at Queen's will be £0.40 /kWh
  • Do I require a specific app to use the electric vehicle charge points at Queen's?

Yes! Drivers wishing to use the electric vehicle chargers at Queen's are recommended to download the Boost eCharge app from the App Store (Apple) or Google Play (Android).

Once downloaded, staff will be asked to register, providing details such as name, address, vehicle details and payment details.

    To commence charging:

    • Staff should scan the QR or enter the charger ID, both of which are displayed on the charger
    • You will then be provided with how much your charge will cost per kWh and your pre-authorisation amount (£40)
    • Secure payment can be made by Google Pay, Apple Pay or by adding a debit/credit card
    • Connect your vehicle to the charge point and charging will commence
  • How do I end my charging session?

To end a charging session, staff should:

    • Log onto the Boost eCharge app
    • Hold the 'STOP' button down at the bottom of the screen to stop charging
    • Disconnect the charging cable from your vehicle
  • Will I be able to view my electric vehicle charging history at Queen's?

Yes, your previous charging sessions will be able to be viewed through the Boost eCharge app.

  • Will I get notified that my charging session is about to expire?
