A corpus is a large quantity of digitised text, which can be analysed to understand how language works (i.e. Corpus Linguistics). It can be used to verify intuitions about how the English language works and to identify and explore patterns in usage.

This workshop will introduce you some free, online tools that can support your research on how the English language is used by real speakers. We will work through a series of exercises, using real language data and online or freely-downloadable tools. Our particular focus will be on the use of corpus tools and techniques for the analysis of literary language (i.e. Corpus Stylistics).

The workshop is aimed at QUB students (UG and PG), hosted by Dr Jane Lugea (AEL, QUB) and delivered by Visiting Lecturer and renowned international expert on corpus methods, Dr Brian Walker (University of Huddersfield), co-author of Corpus Stylistics (EUP, 2019).

In advance of the workshop, you could find out more by watching the Introduction to Corpus Linguistics video, at the following link: https://www.pala.ac.uk/lyon.html

A PC and all other information and materials will be provided at the event.
