Bilingual Belfast Kitchens

Mel Engman is working with Dr Alison MacKenzie and Dr Órla Nig Oirc on a study funded by the Spencer Foundation to investigate intergenerational language learning among families of children who attend Irish medium schools. Inspired by the resourcefulness of IME teachers during the pandemic, researchers outfitted families with point-of-view cameras and everything needed to bake a gorgeous builín aráin together. By examining intergenerational interactions in bilingual Belfast kitchens, the project aims to develop deeper connections between practices of school and home to support Irish language reclamation efforts.
