Awards, Credits and Progression of Learning Outcomes

Examinations
Assessment of Modules:

Assessment or examination will take place at the end of each module. The outline of the method of assessment in each case is available in the individual module proformas. Students must complete all modules and achieve a satisfactory outcome in all compulsory elements. The pass mark for all modules is 40%. Resits for modules will be facilitated at the next available examination/assessment opportunity.

Failure in Assessment:

Where a student has attained an overall pass mark for a module but has not achieved a satisfactory performance in all the specified compulsory elements the result may, at the discretion of the Board of Examiners, be recorded as incomplete. In all cases of failure or incompletion, the Board of Examiners will be responsible for deciding whether the whole module or only specified components should be repeated.

In the case of exceptional circumstances, the School Exceptional Circumstances Committee can make recommendations to the Board of Examiners which permit students to retake failed modules as a first attempt.

The Board of Examiners will consider progress issues, and may specify conditions under which the student may continue the course or require them to withdraw. Students will have the right of appeal to the Central Student Appeals Committee whose decision shall be final.

The BSc is a 5 year, part-time course leading to the award of a BSc in Neonatal Studies

The award will be dependent on the student achieving the following:

- satisfactory completion of all theoretical modules/components

- satisfactory attendance at all timetabled classes and submission of elements of assessment and obtain a pass mark in each separate element.

Candidates who successfully complete 120 credits will be awarded a BSc in Neonatal Studies. A candidate for the Degree, who has satisfied the examiners, shall be placed in one of three classes, the Second class being in two divisions. The BSc in Neonatal Studies will be classified in line with the University General Regulations.

Course Structure

Students will follow a part-time programme of education of not less than two years duration.

Attendance

Students are required to fulfil the compulsory attendance requirements for each module in terms of:

- timetabled classes (to include lectures, seminars, tutorials, practicals and any other classes which may from time to time be prescribed);

Students who fail to satisfy the attendance requirements will be referred to the Programme Coordinator and if their absence is deemed to compromise their satisfactory completion of the course may be referred to the Board of Examiners for consideration.

EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF PROGRAMME

The overall aim of the curriculum is to prepare the student to practise safely and effectively so that, on completion of the programme, the student can assume the responsibilities and accountability required to work in a neonatal setting.
