Queer Peace and Security: integrating queer perspectives in UN agendas

Queering Peace and Security: WPS and other pathways for integrating queer perspectives into peace and security agendas at the UN

Date(s)
October 23, 2023
Location
777 United Nations Plaza New York, NY 10017 United States
Time
10:00 - 12:00

This is both a launch of the recently published paper 'Queer Peace and Security: Recommendations to the United Nations Independent Expert on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity' (English, Español) and a public conversation aimed at engaging queer communities, civil society institutions, and policy-makers in a discussion about what a queer approach to/perspective on peace and security looks like.

Our aim is to provide a space for those interested in learning more or sharing their ideas about queer approaches and ideas about peace and security.

The event is co-sponsored by the University of Sheffield, the Centre for Gender in Politics at Queen's University Belfast, Colombia Diversa, We Are Purposeful, and the University of Copenhagen.

The event will include the following speakers:

1. Lau Vergara (We Are Purposeful) - Feminist coalition building and peace and security

2. Laura Beltrán (Colombia Diversa) - Queer inclusion in Colombia's WPS National Action Plan

3. Jamie J. Hagen (Co-Director of Centre for Gender in Politics, Queen's University Belfast) - Queering Women, Peace and Security: A practice-based toolkit

4. Dean Cooper-Cunningham (Assistant Professor in Political Science, University of Copenhagen) - Recommendations to the UN Independent Expert on SOGI

Their interventions will be followed by an open dialogue (in English and Spanish) on what queer peace and security looks like in practice and recommended next steps for queering peace and security agendas.
