Terms and Conditions

  1. The award is for current registered undergraduate students of the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the point of the programme application.
  2. The award will be made to fund an on campus international summer school which must take place outside of the UK/ROI between 1st June and 31st August 2024 (the departure date must be within these dates and it must start no later than 3 months after the student’s graduation date if they are a final year student).
  3. A list of pre-approved summer schools is available for students to choose from. If a student wishes to join an international summer school not on the pre-approved list, the school must provide approval upon reviewing applications.
  4. Students must be in good academic standing. If a student needs to be in Belfast to undertake a failed exam then this takes priority and hence the student must cancel their trip and return the scholarship to the faculty. Students need to therefore make sure that their flights etc. allow for, or are insured against, such a case.
  5. Students are not eligible if they have previously taken part in any international opportunities within the University including summer schools, short-term study exchanges or international work placements. This includes any scholarships provided by Global Opportunities. Checks will be made and applications will be withdrawn if students have been receipt of any other scholarship relating to international opportunities.
  6. Students must complete an application form and answer three short questions. Applications will assessed by the schools and will be scored out of 30 and the top five scores in each school will be offered the award. Those who are scored 6th – 10th in each school will be placed on a reserve list. If additional funds become available, more places may be offered. In the rest of a tie, academic standing will be considered.
  7. Upon a successful application, students should complete the application process with the chosen university. If a student has chosen to attend a summer school not on the pre-approved list and approval is not provided by the school, the student will have the opportunity to choose a different summer school.
  8. £750 will be offered if a European summer school and £1500 will be offered if an International summer school. This award can go towards tuition fees, travel, accommodation and expenses. To claim the funding, students must provide evidence of successful application at the chosen summer school. Evidence may include an email from the university hosting the summer school, course acceptance form or an academic approval letter.
  9. Payment of the award will be made via QSIS bank transfer. You will be required to update your bank details on your QSIS account. Once you have been notified of successful application, you will be emailed instruction about the payment via QSIS.
  10. It is the student’s responsibility to book all travel and ensure they meet the travel entry requirements set out by the Government of the Country they are choosing to join a summer school. This includes fulfilment of any visa or other entry requirements of the host country. If a visa is required, it is extremely important that students begin the application process at the earliest possible opportunity.
  11. Satisfactory completion of a Student International Travel Risk Assessment form. Further information and a copy of the form can be found here: https://www.qub.ac.uk/directorates/sgc/careers/GlobalOpportunities/Covid19Update/
  12. All recipients of this award must supply either a report of their trip or a video blog to the Faculty of EPS within four weeks of their return. Photographs of the trip will be welcomed and can include selfies along with photographs of work undertaken. A selection of travel reports/video blogs may be used as publicity material for future student mobility programmes or student recruitment purposes; however, the relevant authors will be asked in advance for permission.
  13. If a student provides the University with incorrect or incomplete information, or if they fail to complete the activity or they do not meet the eligibility criteria for an award, the University, may terminate its agreement and will not pay any money to the student. If the money has already been provided, the university may require the student to return any money already paid.
  14. The University takes no responsibility for undertaking health and safety or any other risk assessments of summer school organisations. Students participating in a summer school as part of this Scheme are expected to undertake their own assessments and familiarise themselves with the relevant organisation’s processes to ensure their personal safety and wellbeing.
  15. You must not be in receipt of any other subsidy/bursary for this activity to be eligible. This includes, but is not restricted to, Erasmus/Turing funding and Travel scholarships that are awarded by the University's Student Scholarships and Awards Group. Checks will be made, and applications will be withdrawn if you have been in receipt of any other subsidy/ bursary relating to this activity.
