Anaesthetics Nursing
Anaesthetic nursing over the last decade has evolved into a speciality now recognised as integral in the provision of a quality perioperative experience for those requiring anaesthesia and surgery.
Anaesthetic nurses are essential to the success of this growing service and as such should demonstrate a sound knowledge and understanding of the needs of a diverse patient population.

Person-centred approach to safe and effective anaesthetic nursing care, anaesthetic nurse’s role in and out of the operating theatre environment, a sound knowledge base in physiology and pathobiology is addressed. The role of the anaesthetic nurse in obstetric, emergency and trauma situations, care of children and obesity and anaesthesia are studied.
Where a clinical skills component is included, there will be a requirement for support and supervision of an experienced practitioner in the student’s clinical area.
Please note that courses are subject to a minimum registration, so it is not usually possible to run all courses each year.

The Programme

Course Content
A Short Course normally comprises 3 modules, which you can complete in one year as a part time course of study. On successful completion you will be awarded 60 CATs points at Level 3, and you may be eligible to progress onto our degree programmes.
The anaesthetic nursing short course comprises the following three modules:- Physiology: Homeostasis in Acute and Critical Health Care (NRS 3008) - Semester 1
- Fundamental Anaesthetic Nursing Practice (HSN 3081) - Semester 2
- Anaesthetic Nursing Practice: Specialty Specific (HSN3082) - Semester 2

Outcomes
The Short Courses in Health Studies aim to prepare you to meet the changes and challenges of health care delivery within the health service and independent sector. Modules within each Short Course are practice focused, thus helping you acquire enhanced knowledge and clinical skills appropriate to your area of practice. In addition, you will be provided with the opportunity to advance health care knowledge and develop analytical and academic skills.
The Anaesthetic Nursing programme is designed to enable nurse practitioners in N. Ireland within the field of perioperative practice to acquire and develop those specific biological, psychological, social and professional knowledge and skills, necessary for quality, person centred care management in the peri-anaesthesia phase of both emergency and elective surgery. The programme is thus responsive to need and encompasses emphasis on the holistic aspects of therapeutic care management within anaesthetic nursing.

Selection Criteria
Applicants must hold at least a Diploma in Higher Education or 120 CAT points at level 2 (diploma level) for entry to Level 3 (degree level) study. Applicants who do not meet the entry requirements should contact the School for advice.
International Trained Nurses/Midwives: If you hold an international qualification you will need to provide a UK ENIC Statement of Comparability. This should be obtained prior to submitting your application. You can apply for a statement through the ENIC website: Statement of Comparability (enic.org.uk)
Students accessing these short courses must work in the relevant clinical area.
Please note that these courses are not open to international applicants living outside the UK/ROI.
