Borders of Memory: Remembrance, Resilience, and Reconciliation

A Symposium and Postgraduate Workshop on the Politics of Memory at the Centenary of Partition. Hosted by Institute of Irish Studies, QUB and ICUF: Ireland Canada University Foundation

Date(s)
February 13, 2020 - February 14, 2020
Location
Institute of Irish Studies (27 University Square), Queen's University Belfast
Time
14:00 - 14:34

The aim of this symposium is to interrogate the contested politics of the centenary of partition, in a context defined, inter alia, by the radical upheavals and transformations represented by Brexit, the collapse of power-sharing, the repeal of the 8th amendment of the Irish constitution, and renewed debate and discussion about Irish unity. We are interested in how the commemoration of the hundredth anniversary of partition and the foundation of the state of Northern Ireland interacts with these dynamic political forces, and with what potential political consequences. We are also interested in exploring what has become of the Decade of Centenaries, where it is going, and what changes have occurred in the fields of Irish politics, history and memory studies as a consequence of it.
