BLOG: 'Have your voice heard by the wider University': Queen's pathway to net zero

The climate crisis sometimes seems like such a complex and long-term problem that it is hard to know which first step to take to make a difference.
But, as students, we must be prepared to drive the climate change discourse and demand action. We are the next generation of leaders and change-makers, and, for those determined to create a positive future for our planet and its people, there are so many opportunities ahead.
Something that I advocate for is the potential ‘co-benefits’ of climate action – actions that reduce carbon emissions while also providing benefits for health and wellbeing, finances and economy, local places and communities, and biodiversity, amongst others. For example, travelling by foot or bike can reduce carbon emissions, improve air quality and the character of our streets – all while making us healthier and happier.
Reducing energy use is another example. This saves both carbon and costs – particularly relevant to us given the current energy and cost of living crisis. As students, we can actively support investment in more local, renewable sources of energy like solar and wind power, which will reduce carbon emissions and provide the added benefits of energy security and sustainability, as well as the creation of jobs.
I’m really excited to see Queen’s begin the process of developing a new Net-Zero strategy and making Climate Action a central priority going forward. I’ve seen the passion that the student body has for climate issues, so now is the time to become even more involved and have your voice heard by the wider University.
I therefore urge all Queen’s students to share your thoughts through the survey and learn more from a panel of students and experts at the recent Student Summit.
