What is The Civil Engineering HLA?
Welcome to a new way of learning! Civil Engineering was one of the founding courses at Queen’s University and now we are taking that pioneering energy and transforming the way we teach it with our new Higher Level Apprenticeship.
With the fully funded HLA, you jump straight into the action and work while you learn (and earn!). You’ll have the best of both worlds at your fingertips, as you get taught by the experts at Queen’s and gain hands-on experience from your employer.
We’ve designed the course around what works best for our students. That’s four days at work, anywhere in the UK, backed up with one core learning day on a Friday. Your classes are a blend of online learning plus two days a month on campus. So, you can get the university experience too!
How it Works
The application process is a little different to other Undergraduate Courses at Queen's University, but this timeline shows the key dates to keep in mind.
December - March
Apply for HLA at Queen's
The first step is to apply for your Civil Engineering HLA. Applications are open now!
Find the Perfect Employer
It's important to start looking for an employer early. Firstly, you can look at the options below from our industry network. Secondly, if you have a specific company in mind you can reach out to them directly. Thirdly, you can look at Work+ a company that specialises in matching apprentices with employers.
Employer Interviews
Once you've reached out to employers you will be invited to an interview. This is a great opportunity to find out whether the company is a good fit for the next five years.
APRIL
Employer Confirmed
You should aim to have your employer secured by the end of March. If you still don’t have an employer by April - please reach out to us at askeps@qub.ac.uk
Offers from Queen's
By the end of April, you should hear back from Queen's about your offer. This will be conditional on achieving the grades needed to get onto the course.
AUGUST
Results day
At the end of August you'll get your exam results back. Now is the time to accept your place at Queen's to study the Civil Engineering HLA.
