Heading Home for Christmas? Here’s Your Quick Safety Checklist
Heading home for the Christmas break? A quick security check before you go can save you a lot of stress later. Here’s what to sort before switching off for the holidays.
As everyone starts winding down for the Christmas break, now’s a good moment to make sure your student house or accommodation is secure before you head off. It only takes a few minutes, but it makes a big difference when you come back in January.
Simple things help. Try to take any valuables home with you if you can - laptops, tablets, gaming consoles, speakers. Before you leave, double-check that all doors and windows are locked, curtains are closed, and any lights on timers are set so it looks like someone’s around. If you cycle, try to store your bike indoors or use a secure D-lock in a well-lit area.
Quick checklist before you go:
-
- Pack your valuables
- Lock doors & windows
- Close curtains
- Time lights on (if you use them)
- Bike stored safely (if you have one)
It just gives you peace of mind while you’re away.
These small steps help reduce the risk of opportunistic theft and ensure you return to your home - and your belongings - exactly as you left them. If you notice anything suspicious before leaving or while you’re home for the holidays, report it to the police: call 999 in an emergency, or 101 for non-emergency concerns.
