My Queen's Student Round Up December

Using AI as a student

Wondering how to use AI effectively in your studies? Here’s a simple tool to help you start to use AI confidently and responsibly.

Using AI as a Student

With the ever-evolving information around AI and its applications, it can be difficult to know where to start, especially as a student. A key skill when integrating AI into life at university is being able to identify when it is enhancing your current ability, and when it’s hindering it.

By understanding how AI can work alongside you, you can save time, engage more with your studies, and unlock your full potential.

Jisc’s Discovery Tool

Jisc is a not-for-profit agency specialising in digital, data, and technology services for education. As part of its support for higher education institutions, Jisc offers the 'Discovery Tool' - a developmental resource featuring a range of self-reflective, technology-focused question sets.

One of these is the 'Student digital skills in AI and generative AI' set, designed to help students assess and develop their understanding and responsible use of AI in educational contexts.

The tool features 21 questions that take approximately 5 minutes to complete, giving you the opportunity to reflect on your AI ability in different areas. After completing the set, you will be provided with seven categories displayed in a downloadable chart, which provide an in-depth breakdown of your proficiency in each.

Each category features an explanation paragraph, as well as an evaluation of your current ‘confidence level’ and actionable next steps. Underneath, extra resources are highlighted that provide further assistance based on your confidence level in that area, offering a practical way of building on your ability. If you would prefer to explore the categories without assessing your proficiency, you can enter the tool at any time to browse related resources without completing the question set.

Getting started

As students, making use of the wealth of tools available gives you the best possible chance of maximising your potential. To try Jisc’s ‘Student digital skills in AI and generative AI’ tool, or to explore the other resources the ‘Discovery Tool’ has to offer here, find Queen’s from the dropdown menu, and create an account using your Queen’s email.

Once you have an account, you can take the quiz whenever you like and the chart will create visual comparisons between your attempts, displaying your growth in each area. Why not get started and take full advantage of the tool to discover your full potential.
