SAFE VIBES ONLY: Your Community Safety Support at Queen's
As you settle into Week 5 and explore more of Belfast, here are some safety resources to support you.
Queen's Neighbourhood Engagement Team: Your Community Safety Support
Queen's has a dedicated Neighbourhood Engagement Team that patrols local student residential areas to enhance community safety. The team provides rapid response to any concerns, including noise complaints or safety issues, working closely with campus security and The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) when needed. They also increase patrols during busy periods to maintain a safe, student-friendly environment so you can focus on your studies and university experience.
Sip Smart: Queen's & PSNI Drink Check Initiative
Queen's and PSNI have launched the new 'Drink Check' initiative to enhance safety during nights out in Belfast. Over 30 bars and clubs are now equipped with drink testing kits, allowing staff to test drinks if customers have concerns and contact police if necessary. Venues display posters showing their participation in the scheme, which also acts as a deterrent. The initiative includes 'Ask for Angela', a discreet code word you can use if you feel unsafe. While reported spiking incidents remain rare, this preventative measure provides additional peace of mind for students.

HollieGuard: Your Personal Safety App
HollieGuard is a free mobile app that provides an additional layer of personal security. If you feel unsafe, you can trigger an alert by shaking or tapping your phone, which instantly shares your location with chosen contacts and can record audio or video evidence. The app also features a 'journey' mode, allowing friends to track your safe arrival home. It provides reliable backup whenever you need extra security during nights out, walks home, or any situation where you want additional support.

Fire Safety: New Accommodation Essentials
Moving into new student accommodation? Key fire safety reminders: never leave cooking unattended, avoid charging devices on beds, and properly extinguish cigarettes and candles. Ensure smoke alarms are working, keep escape routes clear, and familiarise yourself with fire safety procedures. Taking these steps helps ensure your new home remains safe and secure.
