Uni Support: What’s Free, What’s Funded?
Starting uni is exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming. The good news? You don’t have to do it on your own. At Queen’s, there’s support for everyone - some of it funded, and some of it free and open to all students.
👉 Funded Support
If you’re a UK or RoI student with evidence (such as a medical or educational report) of a disability, mental health condition, or long-term health need, you may be eligible for:
-
- Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSA) (UK)
- Fund for Students with Disabilities (FSD) (ROI)
These can cover the cost of:
-
- Assistive technology software and specialist equipment (like a laptop or ergonomic equipment)
- One-to-one support (like study skills or specialist mentoring)
- Support with travel costs
You’ll need to apply through your Student Finance provider and provide evidence of your condition. If you’re eligible, you’ll be invited to an assessment. It’s worth doing — funded support is there to remove barriers and help you succeed at uni.

👉 Non-funded support
Not eligible for funding (for example, no evidence or if you’re an international student)? No worries — there’s still plenty of support:
-
- Assistive Technology Hub → guides to free and built-in digital tools you can start using straight away. You can also book a 1-1 AT support session. 🔗 Explore the AT Hub
- Accessible Learning team → tailored support for students with disabilities or long-term conditions such as extra time in your exams, consideration for spelling/grammar, flexibility with deadlines, and extended library loans. 🔗 Access non-funded support
- Wellbeing and Accessible Learning Drop-in (One Elmwood, weekdays 11am - 3 pm) → free, confidential advice on anything from homesickness to academic stress 🔗 Visit Wellbeing at Queen’s
💡 Tip: Don’t wait until you’re struggling. If you’re not sure what you’re entitled to, just ask — the teams are here to help you find the right fit.
