Widening Participation
Raising awareness, aspirations and attainment

Queen's University is committed to ensuring that those most able but least likely to participate in Higher Education should have an equal opportunity to do so. The Widening Participation team has developed a whole range of programmes designed to create those opportunities for everyone from primary school through to mature students, including those from a wide range of backgrounds.

Asylum Seeker Scholarships

Queen's University offers two full tuition fee scholarships, along with a monthly stipend, to students who are registered asylum-seekers in the UK and resident in Northern Ireland.

Research on issues affecting migrant and minority ethnic communities

Queen's on Ethnic Minorities in Northern Ireland brings together leading academics from Queen’s University who can provide an authoritative voice on scholarship and research activity from Queen’s University about the issues affecting migrants and minority ethnic communities in Northern Ireland, towards creating further connections and increasing the impact of such work. The site was produced in partnership with Queen's and the Migrant and Minority Ethnic Council NI (MME Council).

PRISM is the Queen’s University Belfast LGBT+ staff network.

PRISM, launched in 2018, provides a safe, inclusive, and welcoming space for LGBT+ staff in Queen's, as well as helping to promote LGBT+ equality across the campus, informing University policy and organising inclusive events.

The Disability Research Network is a multi-disciplinary initiative.

It aims to enhance collaboration between disabled people, academics, policymakers, practitioners and community and voluntary sector organisations with an interest in co-produced disability research.

Addressing barriers for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic staff and students.

The Charter provides Universities with the framework to identify and critically reflect on institutional and cultural barriers standing in the way of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic staff and students.

Transforming Divided Societies into Welcoming Communities

The ‘Welcoming Communities’ project is based in the School of History, Anthropology, Philosophy and Politics (HAPP), and steered by Dr Timofey Agarin (Lead) and Dr Drew Mikhael (Co-Investigator).

The project aims to produce tangible outcomes, including an actionable policy plan to enhance migrant, minority ethnic and newcomer participation in social and economic life in the region, and a series of capacity building trainings with migrants and policymakers that will help address social inequalities for the former and assist in outreach for the latter.
