Employee Benefits
Employees have access to a great pay, reward and benefits package in recognition of their valued contribution. We aim to offer a range of benefits to attract new, and retain existing, employees who can help us shape a better place to work, and a better world.
The annual leave year runs for 12 months from 1 January. Holiday entitlement is normally 23 days and applies to all staff.
Employees benefit from 10 University closure days (based on 5 days at Easter and 5 days at Christmas), as well as 9 University recognised/public holidays.
Employees of the University are provided with access to a defined benefit occupational pension scheme. There are two main schemes available, Retirement Benefits Plan (RBP) and Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS).
The University prides itself on being at the forefront of best practice in employment. To further this aim, we have implemented a series of work life balance policies.
Formal flexible working is available for all staff from Day 1. The University has also developed guidance for informal flexible working arrangements, and this guidance sets out the process for Agile Working arrangements (staff intranet).
The STAR Scheme allows managers to reward staff via a Performance Award (annually) or a Recognition Award (real time), for instances of exceptional performance and contribution in their role.
There is a range of staff learning and development opportunities and professional development activities available for staff at all grades and categories, across the University (staff intranet).
Looking after your health and wellbeing is key to feeling good and functioning well both inside and outside work. Staff can access information, advice and support via Wellbeing at Queen's.
The Employee Discounts Scheme can be accessed via My Lifestyle Hub, with offers and discounts at hundreds of high street retailers including supermarkets, high street stores, restaurants and many more.
We are committed to embedding the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in every aspect of our activity, from research and education to adopting a leadership role in the promotion of the SDGs, and leading by example.
The University Cycle+ scheme offers staff the opportunity to obtain a bicycle and safety equipment for less than normal cost.
The University offers salaried employees an interest-free loan towards the purchase of an annual travel card, and Translink offers an annual bus and train travel card, which includes 20% discount and free weekend travel.
In partnership with Big Loop Bikes, our new Bike Hub provides a range of services for old and new cyclists alike to help staff get around campus faster, easier and safer.
Childcare at Queen's offers a range of childcare support with our dedicated Crèche facilities and Out of School Club.
Queen’s Sport provides opportunities for staff to take part in a wide range of fitness sessions in our ‘world class’ facilities. Staff can avail of discounted membership rates, including discounts for children at the Summer Scheme.
Staff are entitled to a discount on all standard QFT screenings. Simply show your staff card at the QFT Box Office, or select Staff when booking your tickets online.
The central Staff Networks at Queen's have been established to celebrate the diversity of our staff and to increase and promote the University as a welcoming place to work.
