The Research Project (Study Abroad) modules are specifically designed for incoming (non-exchange) ‘Study Abroad’ students. They involve students undertaking, with academic supervision (once every two weeks), a piece of independent research in fulfilment of the Study Abroad requirements of their home institution. Students will be able to choose their area of research from a list of approved topics/ available supervisors (see below).
The topic may be in any of the subjects/disciplines taught at undergraduate level in the Schools of HAPP: Anthropology, History, Philosophy or Politics/International Relations or AEL: Arts, English & Languages.
Assessment deadlines for your Research Project (4,000-5,000 words) are mid-January for Semester 1 and mid-May for Semester 2. This module is worth 10 credits on the ECTS scale (equivalent to 20 Queen’s University CATS points, Credit Accumulation and Transfer Scheme).

Module Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module, a student will be able to:
• formulate an appropriate research question on a specific topic
• identify appropriate primary and secondary sources
• devise and follow a schedule for research activity
• engage with supervision
• undertake independent research
• compile a bibliography
• produce an extended piece of independent research

Students completing this module will have acquired or enhanced a range of research and independent learning skills, notably: project planning, time-management, information retrieval, critical reflection and analysis.
- Application & Proposal
If you wish to study a research module module, you must choose either HAP2010 or AEL2010 (according to the School of your chosen supervisor) as one of your top 3 module options when making your study abroad application to Queen’s. You must also submit a brief research proposal soon after submitting your application.
The proposed research topic must align with the research expertise of available staff within these two Schools (see below). The Module Convenor will review the proposal prior to the student’s arrival at Queen’s and will identify a suitable supervisor. Note that some academic staff are only available in one semester. Before being formally assigned a supervisor, students are asked to direct any queries to the Module Convenor rather than a potential supervisor.
