The Global Opportunities team, part of the Careers, Employability and Skills service at Queen’s are offering 50 students a free language course in 2022.

The Global Opportunities Team at Queen’s have teamed up with the Language Centre at Queen’s to offer 50 students a free language course in Semester 2, 2022. The move is testament to the University’s dedication to developing graduates who are global citizens. As part of Strategy 2030, the University is committed to “developing our students as global citizens with the skills to work internationally, but the opportunity to build a career locally, meeting the needs of the economy in key sector areas and supporting the growth of the knowledge-based economy in Northern Ireland.”

Ruairi McGrillen, Global Opportunities Development Officer at Queen’s is responsible for developing new international opportunities and also manages the delivery of short programmes. He says: ‘When it comes to today’s global graduate job market, learning a second language can be a huge advantage, and increase your career prospects. Employers value cross-cultural awareness and look for candidates with a greater global understanding of the world.”

Students who undertake a course through the Language Centre at Queen’s also have the opportunity to boost their employability further by applying for DegreePlus, the University’s employability award

It is also hoped that by learning a new language, students will be encouraged to travel to countries where that language is spoken and put their new skills into practice.

Every year, the Global Opportunities team supports over 900 Queen's students take the opportunity to go outside Northern Ireland to study or gain work-related experience.

The funding is available to full time undergraduate and postgraduate students on a first come, first served basis. Applicants must first register on a language course with The Language Centre at Queen’s then apply for this funding. The application deadline is 14 January 2022, 12pm
