Queen’s students join MITACS-UUKI Global Research Internship Programme

Three students from Queen’s have been selected to spend the summer in Canada developing their research expertise .

Mitacs's Globalink Research Internship, in partnership with Universities UK International (UUKi), gives undergraduates in their penultimate year an opportunity to complete a fully-funded 12-week summer research internship in a variety of academic disciplines from science, engineering, and mathematics to the humanities and social sciences.

Three applicants from Queen’s have been selected to complete an internship this year, under the supervision of a professor at one of 70 participating Canadian universities.

James Moorehead (English), Emily Bond (Aerospace Engineering) and Niamh Carbin (Chemistry) were all nominated by Queen’s to participate in the scheme and will travel to the following Canadian Universities respectively:

  • Haroldo de Campos's Plural Poetics at University of Alberta – Edmonton
  • Micro-structural analysis of advanced composite structures at York University – Toronto
  • Theory and Simulation in Biochemical Systems at University of British Columbia – Kelowna

 

The internship are co-funded by Mitacs and the Global Opportunities team at Queen’s University Belfast.  The funding package includes:

  • Return flights
  • Airport transfer
  • Health insurance
  • Living stipend
  • Accommodation stipend
  • Registration for professional development training
  • Registration for industry events
  • Student fees at host institution
  • Access to the Mitacs mentor scheme

 

James Moorehead’s project is to produce a comprehensive critical study of the Brazilian poet, critic, and translator Haroldo de Campos (1929-2003).

 

Emily Bond will be working to improve the manufacturing and mechanical properties of high performance structural components; while Niamh Carbin’s research will be focussed on radical enzymes.
