Fragile February: Feeling a Bit Worn Out? Same. Here’s How to Get Through It.
Short days and colder nights can hit harder than you expect. Here’s how winter affects us - and what actually helps.
By February, the new-year motivation has fully clocked out. The days are still dark, deadlines are piling up, and even small tasks can feel weirdly exhausting. If you’re feeling more fragile than usual, you’re not alone, and that’s exactly why Fragile February exists.
Fragile February is about acknowledging that this time of year can hit differently. After the pressure of January resets and expectations to be “back on it,” February often brings burnout, low energy, and a general sense of "I am tired, and I don’t know why". Instead of pushing through on empty, this month encourages a softer approach to wellbeing, one that’s realistic.
So… what actually helps?
Fragile February isn’t about fixing everything overnight. It’s about small, manageable shifts that can make things feel a bit lighter.
1. Lower the bar (seriously)
Not every day needs to be productive. Some days, getting out of bed, attending class, or replying to one email is enough. Progress doesn’t have to be loud to be real.
2. Keep your routine simple
When motivation is low, basics matter. Eating regularly, drinking water, and getting some daylight (even a short walk) can help stabilise your mood more than you’d think. Think “bare minimum, but consistently.”
3. Talk it out, before it builds up
You don’t need a crisis to ask for support. Chatting things through with a friend, a tutor, or our Student Wellbeing Service early can stop stress from snowballing. If something feels off, trust that feeling.
4. Take breaks without guilt
Rest isn’t a reward; it’s maintenance. Stepping away from study, logging off for a bit, or having a proper break can actually help you focus better later. Hustle culture can sit this one out.
5. Look out for each other (and yourself)
Everyone’s carrying something, even if it doesn’t show. Checking in on friends, being patient when someone’s quieter than usual, or normalising conversations about wellbeing can make campus feel safer for everyone. Sometimes support is just showing up and listening, and don’t judge yourself harshly for having an off day.

Fragile doesn’t mean failing
Fragile February isn’t about staying stuck; it’s about moving forward gently. Feeling fragile doesn’t mean you’re falling behind. It means you’re human, responding to real pressures, and doing your best with what you’ve got.
So, if this month feels more difficult than expected, take that as a cue to slow down, reach out, and treat yourself with the same understanding you’d offer a friend. You don’t need to have it all together; you just need to keep going, one soft step at a time.
And, as always, if you do need someone to talk to, The Student Wellbeing and Accessible Learning drop-in offers a low-pressure way to chat about how things are going, ask questions, or get pointed in the right direction, no long explanations required.
Support Available
If you need someone to talk to, support is available through the Student Wellbeing Service.
