Queen’s University is set to launch the first Future Skills Week from 25th-29th September, during which the service will launch an exciting programme of events and activities for semester 1 - all geared towards helping students build up the Future Skills they need.

Future Skills Week will launch in September at Queen’s University at a showcase event in The Student Centre. During the launch event on 25 September from 11am – 2pm in The Cube, One Elmwood, students will be introduced to a wide range of programmes and events run by the Careers, Employability and Skills Team at Queen’s – all designed to build up the key skills employers demand in the modern workplace. These include:

The Future Ready Skills Course 
This optional, self-study course is taken through Canvas, the University’s online learning platform. It enables students to:

• Understand these competencies that are required from future graduates.
• Identify their strengths and gaps.
• Be signposted to opportunities to bridge those gaps (many of which are accredited by the Future Ready Award).
• Help students to articulate their skills development to potential employers.

First Year Inductions

During Future Skills Week, Careers, Employability and Skills will be running a series of inductions for first year students.

Future-Ready Award

The Future Ready Award is an employability award that allows students to gain formal recognition and a certificate for the extracurricular experience they gain during their time at Queen’s.

Events and programmes

During the Future Skills Week launch in The Cube, One Elmwood, the Careers, Employability and Skills team will be launching an exciting programme of events and activities including:

• The Go Global Fair, exposing students to opportunities to work or study abroad during their time at Queen’s.
• Skills sessions and workshops, dedicated to increasing your self-confidence, overcoming imposter syndrome, selling your transferable skills.

Background

The Education and Skills pillar of the University’s Strategy 2030 aims to provide Queen’s students with the competencies to shape their own lives and contribute to the lives of others. Careers, Employability and Skills are working with employers and utilising research to understand the competencies that will be required from future graduates, and are providing skills development opportunities for students.
