Book onlineThis session will provide an overview on the Research Excellence Framework (REF), the system for assessing the quality of research in UK Higher Education Institutions. In particular, there will be a focus on Research Impact – the effect that academic research is having on non-academic audiences (for example, in society, on health, on the economy and business, and culture). Impact is becoming an increasingly important part of the research process and a central part of successful academic careers. Government and funders expect that there will be non-academic benefits to academic research, as a condition of funding and support. The session will discuss the means by which impact is measured and assessed in the REF, and will provide examples of world leading research impact, both from Queen’s, and from further afield.
