Accessing the Service

When you first attempt to print a PDF you will see "Potential Printing Problems Detected" message?" It is essential that you select “Print my job anyway” & “Do not show this again”. If you experience any further problems go to http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/quick-fix-print-pdf-image.html for Advice. 

About the Service

Information Services (IS) provides printing, copying and scanning facilities available in full colour and black & white (mono). These multifunctional devices (MFDs) are available in all student computing areas. The devices operate on a pre-pay basis: sufficient credit must be available on your Queen's Smart Card before you can use any MFD. All MFDs can print in either A4 or A3 paper sizes and double or single sided; hole punching and stapling are also available. To use the service, you will need:

  • your University (ID) Smart Card AND
  • credit in your Smart Card account

Visitors can purchase a visitors Smart Card at library lending desks to use the service.  

How to use the service

  • Printing

    One or more documents can be sent to print from any computer and are stored in your personal queue for up to three (3) hours.

    Card Reader               You can print from any MFD on campus once you have inserted your smart card into the card reader. You should then follow the instructions on the display. You can then select which document(s) to print. Key settings to note:
    • Mono (Black & white) default settings are to print double-sided
    • Colour default settings are to print double sided and in colour

  • Copying

    Items can be photocopied within the copyright restrictions displayed at the MFDs. You can copy on any MFD on campus once you have inserted your smart card into the card reader. You should then follow the instructions on the display.

    Key settings to note:

    • Black & white default settings: 5p per single-sided A4 page
    • Colour default settings: 20p per single-sided A4 page
  • Scanning

    Items can be scanned within the copyright restrictions displayed at the MFDs. Scanned items are sent to an email address of your choice or to a USB pen drive. You can scan on any MFD on campus once you have inserted your smart card into the card reader. You should then follow the instructions on the display. This is a free service (but you need to have some funds on your card for this to work). Check out our guide to Scanning Using the MFDs.pdf.

  • Poster Printing – Large Format Plotting

    Large Format Plotting  (e.g. for poster production) 

    • Please submit the poster for printing at least 3 working days before it is required: posters@qub.ac.uk There is a financial penalty for requests less than 3 working days.
    • We can plot: PowerPoint, PDF, postscript, encapsulated postscript, docx, psd, jpeg, gif, png and tiff.
    • We cannot trim the output to size or laminate the output. 
    • When collecting the plot, please bring a tube, to provide added protection. We do not supply these containers.
    • Posters will not be given out until payment has been received.
    • Payment can be made for specialist colour printing at the Computer Shop in the McClay Library, (methods of payment: Smart Card, Cash, Departmental Project Code or Credit/Debit card)

  • Specialist Printing

     Specialist Printing 

    • Please submit your request at least 3 working days before it is required: posters@qub.ac.uk
    • We can print: PowerPoint, PDF, postscript, encapsulated postscript, docx, psd, jpeg, gif, png and tiff.
    • We can laminate the output, if required
    • Prints will not be given out until payment has been received
    • Payment can be made for specialist colour printing at the Computer Shop in the McClay Library, (methods of payment: Smart Card, Cash, Departmental Project Code or Credit/Debit card)
    • Email posters@qub.ac.uk your attachment. Please detail paper type, size and date by which the output is required. Your staff/student number & contact phone number is also required.

    Please note – If you try to print transparencies or labels on an MFD please aware that the incorrect type of transparencies or labels can result in significant damage to the MFD. This is not covered under the University’s support contact and users or departments will be held responsible for the full cost of repairs.
